Miss Lucky (AKA Killer)

A Baby Ferret Abandoned in a Park, Survives the Elements.
With Hawks and Owls all around, and an attempted Dog Attack, she makes it to our Rescue / Shelter in one piece due to the
kindness of a Couple (Sam & Susan) who live in the neighborhood and found her while walking their dogs in the park one evening.

And Now, The story as told by Miss Lucky (AKA Killer);
As she stood there in the cold damp grass watching the tail lights of her humans car grow smaller and smaller she wondered what
they were doing. Did they forget something at home? Why did they want her to wait here instead of just letting her go back to
get it with them she wondered? She waited for a while, walking around looking at grass and leaves and stuff while still keeping
an eye out for her human’s car. It seemed like it had been hours since her human left her there in the cold. She’d looked at
everything at least twice, she was tired and getting so sleepy but her human still wasn’t back yet. She was starting to think that
maybe they weren’t coming back. She wondered if they were still mad at her for digging that hole in their couch two weeks ago,
or maybe because of that time she tried to get that sock, "how was I supposed to know there was a foot in it", she thought?
Maybe they’re still mad… Come to think of it, her human was mad at her most of the time during that month or so since he
brought her home from the pet store! There was that time he knocked her off the dining table after she had worked so hard to
figure out how to get up there in the first  place, just for trying out that food he was eating!
She decided that her human must have run away and she needed a place to hide and sleep. Off she went into the cold dark night
to look for a special kind of place to hide, a bush maybe, one with branches that hung down touching the ground with a lot of
leaves to hide herself in. As she searched she thought “I could have been a better ferret” “I could have  used the litter box a
little more often, at least when I was right there. I guess I could have held it long enough to get inside.”  After a while she came
across the perfect place to hide and wait for nightfall, it was a short bush with so many leaves that she couldn’t tell if anybody
else was in there already. She quietly poked in her nose and to her relief, there was nobody in there already and she could use
this place all day long. As she looked around for the perfect place and sleeping position she thought about her human and if they
didn’t come back, she was going to have to find a new one.
She was jolted from her slumber suddenly by the thunderous barking of two dogs who were called back by their human, and just
in the nick of time because in a couple more seconds she’d have been dog food! Once the dogs were gone she had a chance to look
up to see the nicest two humans she’d ever seen! “These are the ones“, she thought as she put on the cutest smile she could and ran
up to them. They picked her up and carried her home with them, played with her a bit then put her in the strangest cage she ever
saw. She was hungry but she didn’t like anything they had to offer, except the water because she was thirsty, too. There was a
blanket in there so she crawled inside the covers and went to sleep. Some time later, she woke to the sound of two other human
voices, this time one of them was kind of old, the man, and "he picked me up and felt around on my ribs, neck, head, even looked
at my “private” parts", he said so he could tell if I was a girl or boy, like you can’t tell by looking at my beautiful, girlish smile!
They talked a little, then the young lady who came with him took me to their car and gave me some food, and boy was it good,  I
was so hungry! Then the old guy came back and we went for a long drive, and when we got out, they took me inside where there
were more ferrets, A LOT MORE FERRETS!  Everybody there said this is the best place they ever lived!
Update: Miss Lucky has been given a nickname, Killer is what we affectionately call her. She got this nickname because of the
tenacity she displayed when she played with both her humans and other ferrets in wrestling games and others like bathtub ping-
pong...she played with so much tenacity it was incredible. She's been with us for about 2 years now and she's getting along with
every ferret around here other than the two domain protectors that live here at our rescue/sanctuary and they don't like
anybody!

                    Jack and Jill

Imagine if you were born in prison, the child of a woman who was doing a Life Sentence, and since you were born there and were
her child, the Life Sentence was commuted to you, through no fault of your own YOU were going to have to do a Life Sentence in
Prison, starting at your birth!
A ferret story with a happy middle, because the ending hasn't been written yet. We all have heard something about a couple
humans named Jack and Jill, something about going up a hill for some water bla, bla, bla…
In this possibly true story, Jack and Jill are a brother and sister couple who happen to be ferrets.
Now, Jack will fill in all the details:
In the beginning, Jack and all his siblings were happy to be with their mother in the cage, growing and learning to wrestle, stalk
prey and all the things baby ferrets learn to do. Then one day they were taken to a bigger pen where there were a lot of other
kits (baby ferrets) and NO mothers! This was new to him but he didn’t mind so much because now he had lots of playmates. That
didn’t last very long at all, definitely not long enough as he and all the others were moved, separated into smaller groups and taken
to pet stores, where there was yet another cage they were locked up in, this time with some older (not like his mom) strange
ferrets. Jack saw all kinds of humans too, walking around and past the cage, some stopping and looking in at him. There were tall
ones, short ones, all kinds. Jack would have been alone in there but he was lucky because his sister Jill had stayed close when they
were being sorted out to go to pet stores back at the farm. One day, one of the humans, the smallest kind, stopped off at his cage
looking and pointing at his sister. One of the humans he’d seen lots of times and a few others gathered around and he, Jill and a
few others were being picked up passed around and stuff. Anyway, one thing led to another and he and Jill were put into a small
box and taken somewhere, then when the little box opened again, he saw that small human, the one that had been pointing at Jill.
Jill was picked up by the little girl human and she was carried around while Jack was left out to explore the strange new place,
there was a new cage there, this one was really nice, it had ramps and holes and tubes, a hanging thing he could crawl into and sleep
if he wanted. Later, he was picked up and put into that new kind of cage, and he looked at everything, in every corner, under,
above and around everything! He went up and down the ramps, through the tunnels, into the hammock, all over! Jill was put in there
with him and then suddenly it got dark, but that was okay because Jack and Jill were sleepy so they crawled into that hammock
and went to sleep.
The next morning when they woke up, it was already light out, and there was that little girl human again. She opened the door and
took Jill out and closed the door, leaving Jack behind. Soon Jill came back by way of the little girl, was put in with him and the
door was closed again. He wondered why he hadn’t been given a tour of the new place but Jill told him all about it. She said that
she went all over the place and saw lots of strange things she’d never seen before! She said she was carried around, but she didn’t
always like the way she was held, sometimes up side down even! She said he was probably lucky not to have gone because she didn’t
get to smell anything, or even get close to all those things she wanted to look at! They talked while they ate, then soon they began
to get tired and sleepy, so they crawled back into the hammock and went to sleep.
Later that day they were awakened by that little girl again, she came to the cage, opened it and took out his sister Jill and off
they went. Jill came back, and Jill left over and over again that whole evening, the same way, the little girl would open the cage,
take Jill out and leave with her. Then while Jill was there telling him what happened that time, sudden darkness, just like last
night. They slept. For about 2 weeks, this was the schedule, Always the same little girl human, and always Jill got to go out and see
stuff, then come back and tell Jack about it. Jill was tired a lot, because the little girl human would wake her up to take her
places. Sometimes the food bowl would get empty, and a different human, a bigger one would come and fill it back up again. Not
always right away though, sometimes they would get SO hungry! They never understood why, but that little girl stopped coming to
get Jill one day, she didn’t come for Jack either, she just stopped coming all together. They would see her walking by sometimes,
but she never took either of them out of their cage, only the big one sometimes would take them out to clip their nails and give
them a bath and stuff, but then it was right back in the cage and the door would close. The food bowl would get empty more often
now, and even the water pipe they went to for licking up a drink would get dry, never for a REALLY long time, but they did get
pretty thirsty sometimes before the water came back to that pipe. After a while, Jack and Jill guessed that this was what they
were supposed to do, this is what life is for a ferret. This is how it went for so long that days and nights got mixed up in their
heads, they only knew that the lights went out suddenly and no body bothered them by waking them up very often. They would
sometimes see other humans come in the room their cage was in, they would sometimes look at them but no humans hardly ever
opened the cage and pet them or picked them up and held them. The big one that always filled the food bowl, sometimes would play
with Jack and his sister Jill for a few minutes or so but they never got a tour of the house again like Jill did when they first got
there.
Then one day, two other humans they never saw before came to their room (where their cage was kept) and they were taken out
and handed to them. The next thing they knew their cage and all their stuff was being moved out and put into some kind of thing
that moves around. It was, as best they could remember the same kind of feeling they felt when they were little, when they wound
up at that pet store. They could tell they were moving, but this time it was different, they weren’t put into any kind of cage, their
cage was right over there, but they were not in it. They were walking around looking at everything, the new humans were there too,
and all they had to do for a chance to look at them and smell them was just walk right up to them. The new humans would pick them
up and pet them and stuff. There was laughing and talking (human kind of language) and they were really paying attention to them.
The human that was controlling that thing picked up Jack felt him all over, on his sides and legs, head… all over, and said
something, then handed him to the other one. They did the same thing, felt his ribs, his legs, head, everything! This was really
strange Jack thought, but soon they stopped moving and they were taken into another place, where they met some more ferrets.
There were lots of ferrets there, and everybody got to come out and meet them. There were ferrets of all ages there, and
everybody got to come out of their cages. They told Jack and Jill that they always did this, two times a day! Jack and Jill
couldn't believe their ears, TWO times a day! Yeah, and the humans play with us all the time too! We have these toys on strings
and they pull them around by the string so we can chase ‘em, that’s lots of fun! “Then the man, he plays monster with us, well mostly
me“, Says Curi! “We really like it here, because the food bowl is always full, well it never gets all the way empty. Sometimes he
waits until we eat most of the crumbs, he says that stuff is expensive, what ever that means.” Charlie told them. “Well!” Jamie
interrupts. “I was a baby when I came here, and the first ferret to ever live here.  I never lived with any other humans, but it's
always been fun, and anytime I want to play, my humans were ready to play too. I never had to stay in my cage all day long, and
can't remember my food or water bowl ever being empty. We get candies lots of times too! These are really good tasting pieces of
soft or dry food that one of the humans gives us with their fingers, one at a time. They only give us one or two  of the soft kind
but sometimes we get lots of the dry, crunchy kind because our daddy says that they have as good of nutrition as ferret food and
they're made by Totally Ferret. "So you guys get to come out of your cage!" "Not just to get a bath or have your nails
clippered?" "You get out of the cage just to play and you do it TWO times a day?" "We have all kinds of toys to play with too,
like balls that jingle, crochet eggs that rattle, tunnels and stuff to crawl through and even a box of stuff to dig in!" Sam says.
"You guys are lucky ferrets to be able to live here because this is the most fun place in the world to live! Have you ever played
bathtub ping-pong?" Asks Lil Bit? "Our daddy takes one or two of us into his bathroom and puts us into the tub then throws in one
or two ping-pong balls for us to chase around." "Those balls are fast and really fun to chase around in there!" Lil Bit says. "Our
daddy, and your new daddy gives us something he says is heart worm medicine every month but I swear it tastes just like chicken
baby food!" Jinx says "I'm new here myself, and I can't wait to play some of those games Lil Bit was talking about but I know
about the medicine cuz I already had some of that stuff, got it the second day after me and my brother Pez got here."
Update: Jack and Jill's visit to the vet proved Jack to be much older than Jill, Jack estimated at around 5-7 years old and Jill
3-5 years old. Later it was discovered that Jack had come down with IBD and is what had caused him to be SO thin when he came
to us. He needs to be treated with relatively strong doses of Prednisone when he has a flare-up. Later still, Jack came down with
Insulinoma and has to be treated with low doses of Prednisone on a regular basis. Now poor Jack is in the early stages of Adrenal
Disease and needs Melatonin implants because he is too old and/or sick to stand the surgery so meds are all I can give him at this
point.

Life in a Cage AND We Think He Frequently Ran Out of
Food and water.
This isn't the best comparison but you can see Sam is a

Sam's Thigh, He is a Mid to Small Sized Male Ferret, He is
Free Fed and Plays usually Twice a Day, He is also 3 +/-
Years Old, but He is on the Flabby Side (Fat N Lazy) but
Happier than Most! He's a Really Good Boy!

If you have lost a ferret and think we may be the organization who rescued it before it died of
dehydration, starvation or mutilation from a bigger, more aggressive animal, you will need proof that
it is yours with pictures of the ferret that show markings that are unmistakably unique. We will not
give up a ferret on someone's word that it was theirs, it will have to be proven, then you must have
identified how it escaped and have repaired the problem before you have a hope of it's return. We
do not adopt out, but if we are overwhelmed with relinquished ferrets we have other rescues that
help us find homes for them. We are still taking in ferrets and if they are found abandoned or lost we
will come pick them up ASAP because they need to see a vet to be sure of their health as they could
be next to death and the average person would not know it as they tend to hide their illness. We have
so many here to care for and we do it for the ferrets, not the people so we don't mind if you lie to us
or fail to give a donation after you promised you would or give a very small donation respective of
what we're doing for the ferret(s) you no longer can care for properly...We don't care! We will take
the baby and be perfectly happy to care for them, so don't hesitate to call if you've found one naked
of fur, abandoned in a parking lot or whatever has happened because we don't care if it's true or not,
we will believe you and not judge you or even care if your story is true or made up. We are in the
business of saving the lives of one of God's helpless little creatures that deserve a full life and are
not guilty of anything other than being a ferret. If it's yours or not we don't care or judge, but that
baby needs medical attention that we will be happy to provide. We prefer not to take in ferrets that
are already ill, but if there is no hope for them besides us, please call us so we can get them to a
veterinarian so they can get the help they need...We are life savers and life fillers...We will save their
life then give them the longest and happiest life God intended for them to have. A life filled with
love, understanding, patience and all the play they can handle. Jack, one of the most recent rescues
was really poor when he came here several months ago and is still too weak to keep up with the others
as far as stamina because about half way through their normal play time, he wants to go to sleep, he's
tired. We keep encouraging him to eat and play to restore his muscles to what they should be but as
you can imagine it is going to take a while after the 3, most likely 5+ year term of imprisonment he
suffered since he was a baby. He is doing better and better every day and we are so proud of him for
his efforts to be just like one of the gang.  Kudos to Little Jack...Keep up the good work Buddy!
Sincerely,
♥♥♥...Ferret Rescue and Adoption of South Texas's small Team of Care Givers and Ferret Lovers...♥♥♥
                                                IN MEMORY of LIL BIT

Lil Bit came to us just a baby, a kit…she was bought from a pet store, an impulse buy and shortly after they
brought her home with no cage or place to call her own, not even her own bed, a small box of food was her only
possession! The humans that bought her decided that she was the wrong kind of animal for them! An e-mail was
sent to shelter after shelter but nobody would come get her and they were thinking of just dumping her in a park
or parking lot where maybe someone would find her. Just as they were warming up the car to go do this terrible
deed the phone rang, it was a shelter some 150+ miles away. The man on the other side of the line asked if they still
had the little ferret baby and was told that they were just going to drop her off somewhere and they were just
about to leave. Drop her off! What do you mean, do you have a home for her that will love her and care for her for
the rest of her life? No, we think that she’ll do just fine in a parking lot or a park…someone will find her. NO, NO,
NO! I see that you’re on the north side of Houston and it’s quite far for me to drive but I’ll be there as fast as I
possibly can! Please put up with her for just another 2 hours and I’ll be there! Please wait for me…I run a small
shelter and she’ll surely die if you just throw her away! I know it’s late already and I should be there by no later
than 11 o’clock, please wait for me, I’ll pay you rather than you making a donation! They said they would wait but to
please hurry! On the way to North Houston, a police chase with the cars facing the wrong way on the interstate
almost got the man and his daughter in a terrible crash, dodging the pursuit and still racing to Houston they arrived
to claim this little, half white from her shoulders up baby girl. She was hungry because her food had run out but no
money changed hands, either way…she was finally safe from what would have been sure death, filling her tiny belly
with the sustenance she desperately craved and water was there too to wash it all down. She curled up on the
front seat with her new human who had a big enough heart to care for her and lots of other unwanted babies just
like her! She was almost immediately given the name Lil Bit because she was so tiny and unbeknownst to all, she was
totally deaf…she was so good at hiding it, I think she was afraid she might be thrown away if anybody found out,
like she nearly was a few hours earlier.

Lil Bit lost her life at about 4 years old because the housing that was the easiest and cheapest to immediately house
the ferrets in when they came flooding in after opening their doors to unwanted ferrets in the area, and keep them
cool in the hot Texas sun was an old camper that in the beginning was sound. Later, the weather and termites
weakened the wood framework and things started to happen. The door started to just “pop” open…this is what got
the best of those curious clowns, 8 or 10 of them went out at night with their curious selves, most were found and
brought back in to the safety of the walls immediately, but Lil Bit was deaf and couldn’t hear her daddy calling her
or the rattle of the food in a can, not even the squeaking of the ball they so loved to kill could penetrate Lil Bit’s
broken down ears! She never heard the big dog either and after it was done with her she crawled, as painful as it
was back to the door she’d left through but it was shut! Daddy was out looking for her and wasn’t there so she
tried her best to dig her way back in up through the floor. Just when she thought she couldn’t bear any more of the
pain of such strenuous work, there was her daddy that she knew could make everything all better…but he couldn’t!
Oh, he told her that it was going to be alright, but he knew it was going to be all wrong! She was so badly bitten and
broken that he knew that she didn’t have long, not long before the Rainbow Bridge would appear before her, all she
had to do was just go to sleep in his arms as he lied to her, crying! There was nothing better he could do! Her little
ribs were broken and she was bleeding from the inside! Poor Lil Bit didn’t have a chance at all, the clock had been
started and it was already counting down!

I lost my beloved Lil Bit because she was curious and deaf! If you can help with a monetary donation for a new
building for our 25 survivors who I’m afraid to let play in groups over 3-4 strong because I know this will happen
again if I can’t keep track of everyone playing…please do help. We want nothing more than a place that’s safe for
those that we’ve rescued and promised to keep safe from harm, a place to play and be the curious animals God
made them to be. I’m $4,500.00 short of what we need and if all the ferret lovers would give just a few dollars
we could meet our goal and have them safely housed by the spring. Please help us stop tragedies like Lil Bit’s from
happening to any more of our babies! I only meant well when I started rescuing ferrets, but if anymore go like Lil
Bit, I might as well give them back to God before any more suffer in pain like sweet, innocent Lil Bit.

Thank you for reading about Lil Bit's tragedy, I really need your help with this housing problem because I only
meant well when I started our little ferret rescue and unfortunately, we're so far from major cities, this
shelter/sanctuary winds up being most of our rescues' forever homes. Please visit our website and watch the video
"Ten Ferrets Play With a Big Hose". This is indicative of the life they used to enjoy and could once again, if we can
just get them a new, safe building to call home! Thank you for reading and for your help!
Thank You,
Micheal Forrest
